Why MOV files are so big

ProRes and other intermediate codecs keep almost all image data for editing, which is great in a timeline and terrible for sharing. H.264 is built for delivery and is typically 10–50× smaller.

iPhone MOVs are smaller but still high-bitrate; compressing them can halve the size with no obvious difference.

Frequently asked questions

How much can I compress a ProRes MOV?

Often by 90% or more when converting to H.264 at default settings.

MOV or MP4 output — which should I pick?

MP4 for sharing and the web; MOV if a tool requires the .mov extension.

Can I keep transparency?

Turn Transparency on to write ProRes 4444 — but that will not make the file smaller. For small transparent files use MOV to Transparent WebM.
