Transparent WebM on the web
A transparent WebM can be dropped into any page with a normal video tag and composites over whatever is behind it — gradients, photos, other video.
Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Android render WebM alpha. Safari does not, so add an HEVC-alpha MP4 source first if Apple users matter.
Frequently asked questions
What source do I need for transparent WebM?
A video that already has an alpha channel — typically ProRes 4444 or Animation MOV exported from After Effects, Premiere or Final Cut with "RGB + Alpha".
Can I make a normal video transparent?
Not automatically — there must be an alpha channel in the source. Export from your editor with alpha, or key out the background there first.
How do I embed transparent WebM?
Use <video autoplay loop muted playsinline src="file.webm"></video>. No extra CSS is needed for the transparency to show.
