How GIF transparency works

GIF supports a single fully transparent colour, so each pixel is either visible or invisible. Rewwwrap thresholds the alpha channel at 50%, which keeps edges crisp.

Soft shadows and glows cannot be partially transparent in a GIF. If you need smooth edges on the web, use transparent WebM instead.
