MOV to WebM for motion graphics
MOV masters from editing apps are huge — often hundreds of megabytes for a few seconds of ProRes. WebM shrinks them to a size a website can actually stream, while keeping the transparency needed for overlays, animated logos and UI motion.
Transparent WebM plays in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Safari ignores the alpha channel, so pair it with a fallback if you need transparency on Apple devices.
Frequently asked questions
Can I convert ProRes MOV to WebM?
Yes. ProRes 422 and ProRes 4444 MOVs are decoded in the browser. ProRes 4444 with alpha becomes transparent WebM when the Transparency switch is on.
Why does my transparent WebM look solid in Safari?
Safari and QuickTime do not render VP9 alpha. Check the file in Chrome, Firefox or Edge — the transparency is there.
Why is transparent WebM slower to render?
VP9 encodes the colour and alpha as two streams. Running the optional native helper on your Mac or PC speeds this up dramatically.
